Environmental Education

Environmental Education has emerged in response to concern for the quality of the environment at local and global levels. It has become a significant curriculum area in education systems throughout Australia.

Environmental Education helps students to develop an awareness of the environment and the part they can play in determining the quality of their local and global surroundings.

Our school has introduced an environmental focus into existing programs and courses in a number of key learning areas. Our school also takes part in a number of environmental projects with the community and other non government agencies.

Students participate in School Clean Up Day.

  • Students from all classes may enter environmental colouring/design competitions as they arise.
  • The whole school joins in Earth Hour.
  • Special environmental assemblies are held or performed by students to acknowledge important events.
  • Students look after our vegetable gardens.

Student Representative Council members from each class check taps and light switches in classrooms and do a weekly tally of low/no waste lunches to encourage the use of reusable containers.

Students from Years 3-6 form an environmental group called the Eco Warriors.  They set up and supervise the co mingle and recycling bin system in the playground each day.  This involves placing food waste and recycling bins at 12 posts around the school every morning and then emptying them at the end of each lunchtime.  All fruit/vegetable waste is added to our compost bin.

All staff and students have become more environmentally responsible and aware since the advent of this system.

Through our Environmental Education initiatives we aim to promote awareness and sound practices that will become a way of life for our students. This will ensure the development of a growing generation of youngsters who will naturally consider and understand the fragility of the natural resources and surroundings they have grown up with. Through involvement in our school practices they will know that every individual can do something to protect and maintain their environment.
